The Engineer – the most versatile unit

Now that we’ve talked about landmarks and factions, we want to turn our attention to something smaller, but immensely important to your settlement and economy. This civilian unit will be at the core of everything you do in the game and managing them to perfection can help you win the match. Of course, we are talking about the “engineer”. Their main tasks are constructing, surveying, expanding, and interacting & stealing.

Constructing:

When you start a match, you start with a handful of military units, carriers, and engineers. Carriers will automatically bring materials from A to B and once a building has enough construction material the engineer will automatically start to construct the building. In order to better control them, we added an option to toggle “auto construct” on or off. This will give you more flexibility on prioritizing what building you want to see constructed first and use your engineers somewhere else

Expanding:

If your initial territory is full of buildings and you found an interesting spot with your military units you can use your engineers to expand your territory. Simply send them to the border and let them do their job. Be careful: Using all your engineers to expand your territory could leave some buildings unfinished and your economy will suffer. Finding the right balance and strategy is key.

Surveying:

Underground areas provide the chance to find gold, iron, coal, gems, or stone. However, it is not known what you can find where. Engineers are trained to find the best spot for the right deposit making it easier for you to place the correct building.

Interacting / Stealing:

Engineers are multi-talented units and their last skill is interacting and stealing.

Last week we already talked about Landmarks and that you need to fulfill different requirements in order to get a reward. If you found a landmark make sure to check what is needed and explore them further with your engineer. After this, it is up to you if you want to spend some of your resources in order to get the reward or if those resources are currently more important in your own settlement.

"Getting the engineers to the right place was a lot of work! They could do so many things, some of them automated, some continuous. But every time we played with them, it was easy to see how much they mattered to the game. Metas will revolve around them, their use and their recruitment timing." – Creative Director

You can also utilize your engineers by exploring and exploiting the enemy. If you see something you like or you think would be useful for you in the long run, send some engineers to steal the goods! Of course, those goods don’t necessarily need to be useful for you but stealing them from your opponent might disrupt their economy. But be careful! If the engineer comes too close to a military unit, they will flee in panic and drop anything they are currently carrying or doing.

Engineers are very versatile. If you ever want to recruit more, make sure to construct a Guild house.

It is time to welcome the engineer to our family in the comments below. What do you think about this unit and their ability to construct, survey, expand and transport?
